@Romanovsearcher
The Rasputin affair is greatly underestimated here. It is well-known that he had close ties with both Nicholas and Alexandra. In their correspondence she mentions him as 'our friend' and speaks reverently about him, while there exists photos and witnesses to support this. The claims that the letters leaked to the press were a hoax is false, while there's plenty of evidence that supports that Rasputin was considered by Alexandra to be their greatest friend and saviour, the only one who could stop Alexei's bleeding episodes. Regardless of how he did it, he saved his life more than once, and that is also a documented fact. The documentary also forgets to mention that the ministers were named by Nicholas, and later Alexandra, when he went to the front. The unpopular Protopopov and others were named by Alexandra at the suggestion of Rasputin, for those ministers whom he disliked were automatically mistrusted by Alexandra. It seems to me this is a poor attempt of the documentary to shift the blame of the Revolution to foreign powers and away from the Romanovs and Rasputin. Nicholas and Alexandra weren't bad people, or cruel, but they were inept to rule Russia during the backbreaking times that the First World War created; and the structural, economic, and political problems that faced Russia are wholly downplayed here too.

The worst thing that ever happened to Russia was Lenin’s birth. The next worst thing was his death.

This documentary is utter tripe. Russia was the poorest per capita nation out of the great European powers. It had the lowest literacy for both men and women, the lowest level of per capita industrialisation, Russian agriculture was vast but highly highly small scale and inefficient. A Russian farmer was likely as not considerably worse off than a French or even a German farmer. The high prices of pamphlets were due to the dangers in not being able to sell many due to seizures by the secret police and the risks of being caught for both publishers and writers. Lenin never lived any kind of high life. He and other exiles had to live very simply and often took various jobs to support themselves. Living conditions for Russian workers were also among the worst in an era where industrial workers as a rule lived badly. That people were inspired by variously liberal, Socialist or even anarchist messages is no accident when they knew nothing but grinding poverty, abuse from the bosses and almost no capacity to move up and around in society. They wanted better lives for themselves and their children.

@stevebrindle1724
Seems like the makers of this documentary see the Russian people as one. This is nonsense, it was the peasants and workers who died on the front lines while their families starved art home! The Bolsheviks had the right idea. Bread and peace! The overthrow of the monarchy destruction of the Russian ruling class and the establishment of soviets!

@irawilliams343
Nicholas II and Alexandra brought their family and the monarchy's downfall with their mistakes and idiocy. But the children didn't deserve any of the barbaric killing. Kind of like Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. They reap what the sow but their children, most especially the Dauphin shouldn't have been subjected to such mistreatment and cruelty.
