Hey how are you. I'm pretty new here and I watched your Cancelled video (I like spelling it with two L's because it makes me feel fancier) before watching this one. I think your perspective in all of your videos is so elevated from the average point of view. I LOVE the fact that you can dissect different or opposing points of view in the form of empathy, understanding, and explanation. For me, your videos are always a litter reminder to be a better person. Understanding what someone said or did and WHY they said or did that is a much more intelligent response than immediately succumbing to the mind and emotions by getting all in a tizzy. I would liken your channel to The Last of Us 2. Wildly criticized online by dumb doo-doo heads because it showed that maybe we all aren't the unwavering "good guy" we thought we were all along. You have to see where the other side is coming from so that maybe, were you in their shoes, you'd do the same thing they did. You do a fantastic job being unbiased in giving everyone a fair shot. Basically what I'm saying is I think your content is so inspiring and hope you continue to enjoy doing it even after some negative fallout. I especially love the continued joke in this video about how you were born in the 40's or w/e :) Комментарий от : @ericfrisbie4744 |

Maybe it's because it's 4 years later and in the middle of a money crisis, or because I'm from a different culture, but I have no respect for rich people who spend their money on needlessly expensive stuff, like a t-shirt with "supreme" printed on it for a thousand dollars. Buy fucking bread instead. In other words, I've already built the guillotine and am ready to use it. That means I have no respect for opulence. This video was not very relatable to me Комментарий от : @ferenccseh4037 |
Just watched this video 10th, 20th, 30th.. Or whatever time. It's so glam, and fun. But fun fact, I watch it again and again because I feel some meaning behind fun, but it's hard to acknowledge that through this glamour. To much humor, to much art. Also please don't judge my grammar, I'm from Russia, and it's not my best day for a long time. Комментарий от : @phoenix-ardjin |

You know, in this idea of gothic aesthetic as decayed/dead opulence, I think it's also important to note where current gothic subculture and aesthetics derived from. As with most alternative subcultures, goth was born out of the many derivatives of rhe 70s punk movement, which was not only born out of poverty, but FLAUNTED it. The leather vests and patchy clothes are integral to the classic look because that's what was cheap, reliable and available. It rejects the notion of performing class altogether, in favor of an outright statement of "not only am I poor, but I refuse to pretend I'm not." It's almost like a counterspell to the glamour of opulence. And after punk came many breaks. The riot grrrl movement was the rejection of both misogyny within the larger punk world, and the idea that feminity as an aesthetic had to be quiet and demure. The goths took up the mantles of vampires and dead aristocrats as not just class commentary but as a warning to not become the monster we seek to destroy. The emo and scene movements were launched after the turn of the millennium not only because of that slow shock that commenter mentioned about said turn, but because people sought to scream such feelings and more into a void that actually listened back. But all of these movements (and more that I didn't mention) are fundamentally impoverished, collectivist, and anti-capitalist. They are, as a concept, a rejection of the idea that being rich and opulent is even a good thing at all. They refuse to look the part of a temporarily embarrassed million/billionaire. They embrace community and supporting people, unlike the ideal of the individual struggle against the wealth and class heirarchy. But most importantly, they want things to change, not just because they as an individual have it bad, but because EVERYONE has it bad. In the American dream, you only make it because you rose up above the rest. But alternative subcultures ask "but why did you have to rise in the first place?" About the aesthetic of decay, speaking now in 2023: People have commented on how accurate her prediction for the aesthetic of urban decay was (e.g. liminal spaces). I'd like to add to it the revival of Wave and goth music, which to my knowledge kicked off by the memetic popularity of the band Molchat Doma on Tiktok, and with it, the aesthetics of the 70s-90s Soviet Union, or what remained of it. The grey concrete brutalism, the crumbling facades of housing blocks twenty stories high, the glowing fluorescence of distant street lights... The sense of loneliness, absence of humanity, abstraction from anything living and feeling, speaks to people. As the capitalist system is slowly collapsing around us, we become reminiscent of the last time an economic system broke down, leaving only a carcass of isolation and hopelessness behind. Truly fascinating and educational video. Just wanted to clarify that garmarye is a Scots word, not a "Scottish" word. I doubt anyone will see my comment that’s coming 3 years late, but is there a link to the article she references for the definition of tacky? I would love to know if the author intentionally referenced a line from no exit by Sartre or if they simply are expressing a common thought in a common way (too common/simple/etc to be accused of plagiarism though, imho) Комментарий от : @catherinedoyle9390 |
Guillotines are such a neat statement of the French revolution. Executions were nothing new of course. They were a staple of public funded entertainment for centuries. The guillotine applies the rules of the industrial revolution to them though. It makes the noble art of beheading into a low cost, no skills needed, quick, efficient business. Not only is it sending the message that the prole are coming for the bougie, but that they are coming for all the bougie. And that the process will be like any other day at the factory.
