 | The reason Turkmenistan is so closed is because of the trauma left over from the Soviet Union. Under the Soviet Union, oil made it one of the best Russified countries. Even some 10,000 Armenians were put in Turkmenbashy in 1988 after the Sumgait pogrom. When Turkmenistan gained independence, they wanted to erase all Russian traces and there was even a death penalty for displaying Russian advertisements. Men and women had to wear tradional clothes in schools, state buildings, markets. Really everywhere. They therefore did not want anyone just entering the country to protect the country's sovereignty.
