 | I'll have to object on the subject of color identity because here's the thing: I'm fairly sure color is more about how you present yourself to the world rather than the content of your heart. My biggest evidence for it is planeswalkers' ability to change color identity throughout their iterations such as Ajani starting in boros to represent his anger but eventually moving to selesnya as he grows older and wiser. This also handily fixes a problem I had with representing entire tribes as one or two colors. Under the concept of color being one's true colors, does that mean that this whole race of people is has an immutable inherent tendency towards certain characteristics because of that color? That has implications that trouble me (even though I'm fairly sure it's canon in the magic multiverse but eeeeh. However, under the idea that color is more about how you present yourself to the world, it handily explains that this isn't the inherent nature of that type of creature but rather the way they present themselves as they learned from their culture!  | People always bring up Papers, Please as this ultimate perfect encapsulation of ludonarrative design but it has been absolutely eclipsed for me by The Imperial Gatekeeper--an erotic game in which you can abuse your position of authority to sexually pry on those passing through the border station you work at. Papers, Please always failed to land its moral/ethical dilemma of turning people back and doing your job despite it affecting other people's livelihoods because when that prospect is gamified, I care far more about winning the game than I do the feelings of these digital nothing-people. When a game presents a dilemma of "Hey you could do your job or you could have sex this thicc anime girl for three hours", however, I suddenly have to grapple with the facts of my actual corruption, how it is affecting people, etc. All of a sudden, those mechanics interlink in a way that is much more significant--maybe I can overlook an out of date passport from a refugee when she asks if there is 'anything she can do' and, in the ensuing sexual abuse, the player feels enough attachment to let them through the gate. I never felt a pang of regret when sending away the downtrodden of Papers, Please but, in the post-coital clarity of Imperial Gatekeeper, I've felt like a truly horrible person for taking advantage of these women, taking their anal virginity, coating them in baby-paste, then sending them back they way they came all because I know my boss would ding me for letting someone through with a falsified document. There is no means of doing well in Imperial Gatekeeper while engaging fully with its ero-game aspects which play far more into actual structures of perversion/abuse of power than Papers, Please wherein the only motivational force is the extrinsic gameplay reward.  | First time listening to your videos, just starting binging and so far so good! found you through Prof's lore video and honestly a number of fellow vorthosy player's suggestions. That been said, as an illustrator one of the main flavors for me in Magic is precisely the artist's credits, maybe one if not the most important factor that made me want to play this game was seeing someone playing it, checking a few cards and felt enamored with some very particular artwork styles, Rebecca Guay, Quinton Hoover, Kev Walker, Mark Zug, DiTerlizzi, John Avon, other names too but definitely them and most specially Rebecca went almost instantly recognizable for me, I was like searching for every Rebecca card in this guy's collection lol. And the mood she stamps is just unique to her style, want something calm, maybe even melancholic, yet still beautiful she was the one for that card. That artist matters mechanic they included in Unhinged was great, the Persecute Artist with the Rebecca Guay art and flavor was on point. Years later Lorwyn introduced other new great artists with beautiful kind of fairitaley artwork and then suddenly Wizards decided they just wanted a more homogeneous more realistic but still digitally feelsy artwork, and still plenty artists stood up and you could feel like they really picked certain artists for certain stuff, Svetlin Velinov is great for big monsters and goofy but endearing goblins, Seb McKinnon one of my today's favorites recalls that fairitaley style I loved and missed with a bit dark twist. I am lowkey mad the new crossover era coming upon us is going to break a lot of that immersion, and plenty folks say they don't care about "immersion" at all, understandable they are the less vorthosy players and everyone has a different interest and motivation for everything that's cool, but just like you perfectly said in this video, nobody would love a game with just "Card #5.02 / Effect X - Y" game, like sure some folks enjoy messing with MathLab kind of apps but certainly with Magic the majority of players even the most dedicated Spikes maybe unconsciously enjoy the fact that a time bending mage is altering the timing in the game nerfing other instant speed mages, when a card without any Teferi flavor would be totally different and way less appealing.  | +Spice 8 Rack The reason that the artist's credit/name is circled is because which artist WoTC chooses makes a huge difference on the style of a set. Compare Rebecca Guay to Phil Foglio to Todd Lockwood. Each artist has their own distinct style to the point of looking like they are from a different product. And that choice of artist's is intentional and necessary because they evoke different feels and aesthetics. Rebecca Guay reminds one of Arthurian legends. Phil Foglio reminds one of a hillarious cartoonist. Todd Lockwood reminds one of the majesty of nature and a creature's physique and musculature. The artist makes the difference.  | For a complete Menue à la carte look at Growth cycle, then at Deathsprout, the picture, the costs, the effect, the anecdote and then the artist, someone is telling a story there. Look at the rest of the artists work, seb mckinnon has a thing for females with long flowing hair. A lot of his Pictues tell a story in itself, deathbloom takes imho the cake, because of the visual comparsion to murder, and the anecdote on the m20 murder.  | If you prefer to hang onto your hair and eyeballs, i were to kindly suggest you leave this topic where you left it, especially when it comes to that ludicrousnarrative view on the whole game, as well as the rather bland character depiction and development, even though the games 'flavour' has every potential to offer some very deep and interesting view on all sorts of morality and whateverity. Just recall that this game is ultimately made by Americans whos society largely decents from the Brits, they know but two flavours and have been kept in that mode by the divide and conquer strategy of the aristocracy actually in power. Or like some of us realize on the main land of the EU, the enlightenment never actually crossed the channel, and clearly anyone moving to the USA in the haydays was foremost a refugee from the enlightenment (aka. move to the USA or loose your head, a choice pretty easily made, but with clear and dire consequences). Which all becomes most apparent if you compare the expansionistic colonialism of the whole of the European Aristocracy (including and foremost that of the Brits) with the expansionistic capitalistic colonialism of the America's. ps. if you actually made it through all of that, have you ever considered doing episodes? And i do not mean psychotic, but you know, where you cut up a big script into manageable chunks of say around 10min that seem to be favored by 'the algorithm' so that your audience has a reason to come back for more, and giving you the opportunity to get multiples of 'content' for the price of one. Obviously a mere suggestion, that might be worth some thought. But i guess so is Brexit and from the outside look on the Brits approach to that, that might be asking to much... ;P Even though i doubt it, i did come back here to mention that if you are offended by anything i said above, realize i am Dutch, i grew up with English Sarcasm, Irony and Cynical Ludicrasy, which might offer some consolation.
