I used to have a pinned comment here that answered questions, but, like...I can't find it? It vanished, I think? I do not know why or how or if I did it myself and forgot, but I just figured I'd take the time to say hello and remind you to not get mad at me for saying lady I live with. Thank you.

I wonder how she would feel, after experiencing the tutorialising of Unicorn Overlord. I think part of why it's such a great title is the "easy to learn, hard to master" aspect that gives room for non-gamers like her to engage more deeply with the medium

this is really interesting, I have a mom who has always claimed to not be a video gamey person but I have always argued it's just because she didn't have early exposure. I think a lot like my mom and I'm not super interested in gaming but I do have this built-in logic of what and how to do things in video games. and I also see my aunt who grew up in the same household as my mom one of the only differences was that my aunt had early exposure to video games and gamed frequently with friends. Your video perfectly explained why my mom might get more frustrated or comprehend less when trying to game

As a non-gamer & have-never-gamed-er, I still cannot mentally compute / reconcile the number of people interested in any particular videogame with the tremendous amount of work that goes into coding/creating/debugging these games.
I cannot understand how there could be enough users/gamers interested in and willing to shell out money to play any particular videogame, and enough computer programmers specialized into coding that particular game. It just seems economically impossible.

Hey! I know this video was made a long time ago but I wanted to share with you my experience with games because I think it’s interesting compared to yours and your wife’s. It sort of feels like an in-between and I thought about it throughout the whole video.
I don’t play a lot of games. I would love to get into them and I have tried, but I just tend to not play them. On the other hand, I do watch a lot of gameplay online and while with friends. This being said, I’ve found that my main problems when I play games are that I expect them to move faster than they do and that I have a really hard time picking up controls. I know that I am expected to punch, shoot, or dash. I am aware of what most of the little things all over my screen mean. I do not know how to properly use or access these things. I do not have the muscle memory to quickly dash and attack while moving. I don’t know where the buttons are on the controls or what each normally does. What I’m mostly getting at is that I am aware of what I am able to do, but have no clue how. When playing games, I expect them to be easy and move along quickly. When I watch games, especially online, I generally see edited down versions that show people doing things relatively effortlessly and in a short amount of time. This makes it really frustrating when I spend hours on levels that I feel like I should have the knowledge to complete easily. Unlike your wife, I know that games have limitations and don’t have the expectation for them to be so open but having been exposed to edited videos of the games I have the somewhat unique expectation that I feel neither you nor your wife would have that the games will be quick and easy.
I know this isn’t really what you were searching for in the making of your video and you will probably never see this but I did think it was still worth sharing in case somebody does come across my message in the future!

I think what many people nowadays forget is that modern games are produced for people who have been gaming since their childhood. I made a similar experiment with my niece who wanted to play Pokemon. If you ask fans of the franchise who played it since it's original inception with Red and Blue, it feels like an overly simplistic game and every intuitive. Most would say just start with the latest games. But there are tons of nuances that we take for granted that people who never played it, simply don't understand. And I was aware of that, which is why I let her start with Red and Blue and let her progress from there. I did this because I knew how many new mechanics were introduced over time that would confuse her and propably detract from ther enjoyment. Again, most people don't realize it and think "Pokemon? Isn't that a vey simple game?". For us it is, but it wasn't for her. Original Red and Blue alone is already hard for someone who never played it. For example, try to memorize the entire type chart. The game doesn't really hold your hand in general up to gen 7. Only then does it kin of give you help but only in the way that it tells you which attack is effective against your current opponent. But no Pokemon game from Gen 1 to Gen 6 every tells you specifically that Poison for example is effective gainst grass types. You basically have to figure it out or like you said, inquire on the internet or ask people. But you could just learn the type chart on the internet right? Well, would be easy if dual types didn't exist. And there is basically no pure grass type in Gen 1, they are all dual grass/poison types. So my niece was thoroughly confused when she attacked grass type Pokemon with poison attacks just for them to not be super effective because she had no idea about dual types. Even if she could have searched the internet for these information, it's not as easy as for seasoned players who not only know exactly how they have to ask google but also know which webside to console. Get on google and look for a Pokemon type chart and you will get 20+ recommendations. Which of them do you consult? Stats didn't interest her at all, which is fine. You don't necesairily need them. Though it's still confusing when Surf on a Gyarados deals less damage than a bite attack when you don't know that there are two stats for damage calculation, special and physical attack stats. You also need to memorize which attack is special or physical. Stat boosts also exist, which felt unnecessary to her. Now let's try to explain them what a stab boost is.

When you look at it from a perspective of a someone who has never played Pokemon at all, there are tons of information they have to process and memorize. We long time fans even memorize the exact stat number on every single Pokemon, including their types an attack pool. For my niece even the basics were difficult to remember. Like remembering that you have to safe manually. The only thing she didn't have much trouble with were items. But even using the map and realizing where you have to go is difficult. It's not actually true that she didn't have trouble with items at all. She didn't comprehend how to catch Pokemon She got that you have to weaken wild Pokemon and use Pokeballs from the tutorial. But she had no idea how to access them during battle. Using the item bag mid-battle didn't seem intiutiv to her and it propably isn't. Same with using potions. She only ever used them outside of battle so the thought that you could use them in battle too never crossed her mind. I think it's normal as you are trying to establish rules for the game. To her using items during battle felt like cheating, like she is breaking the rules. Now keep in mind the additonal information and features added in the other Pokemon games. Like the Physical/special split, abilities, hidden abilities, breeding, egg moves, mega evolutions etc. Pokemon for gamers like me, who have played since the 90s or others who even played since the 80s, Pokemon really is a simplistic and intuitive game. Now imagine I let her start with something like Final Fantasy or even an arpg like Devil May Cry for example. I'm also a guy who's played Yu-Gi-Oh since it's conception. So when friends ask me if I can teach them the game, I let them do a historical progression game. Because teaching them slowly from the beginning is the most beginner friendly method to get them into yu-gi-oh if they never played card games like Magic or Hearstone. Even at it's basic, Yu-Gi-Oh isn't an easy game to fully comprehend. Heck, I still find out stuff I didn't know after 20 years. It's easy to get into gaming when you started in the 80s and 90s becaue back then it still was rather simple. Yet also challenging. But after decades of games, it of course became quite convoluted with additional features etc. We just don`t realize this anymore because for us it's just some minor additional infromations and feature we have to learn and memorize. Now imagine someone completely new to gaming trying to get into it.

As a hardcore-ish gamer, I bout my girlfriend Stardew Valley because 1) her laptop could run it and 2) because it was a nice chill vibe for her to farm, go in the caves, and flirt with the residents. After a few days she says "hey, can I try Counter Strike?" Now I'm not even good at Counter Strike but I put her in a deathmatch and told her the controls, and watching her struggle showed me how complicated even a simple FPS game can be for someone who actually goes outside. She's decent at mario kart and overcooked though so we will play games like that together but generally she just nods her head to get me to stop rambling about what I play consistently

for those that came like me expecting some kind of "game recommendations" for non-gamers, I feel that the one that most fits this games are nintendo ones. Maybe an easy 3D Mario game, Mario Kart, and now Breath of the Wild are the most suitable. You could go for a Sims 4 or a Stardew Valley, but those wouldn't really improve the "controll over the controller" that non-gamers need to get into this world

This is actually an experiment that I happened to have done as well though somewhat unintentionally. My cousin is in love with games but more so as a spectator, someone who knows the background of every title possible yet never one to try to pick up the controller and play. One time I was playing some FIFA and she had just been watching, I then had the splendid idea that we should both play on the same team and try and beat the bot on world class difficulty. Seeing her with a controller in her hands felt so out of place for her, like she was uncomfortable, she would ask me if she was holding the controller in the right way and if certain fingers should be on the R2 L2 pads on the top. I'd tell her the buttons and what they would correspond to then she would look down at the lettered buttons each time she would play an action to make sure she pressed the right one. As someone who knows these controller's commands like the back of my hand, it was a weird feeling seeing someone back at the beginner stages of learning a controller's mapping for a game. It was a stage in gaming that I undeniably had been in before yet when I think back on it I must have been 4-5 years old when I was at that level of learning in games meanwhile she was 14. We are both the same age yet at completely different levels of experience in something that we both love. Though perhaps it was the genre of the game that we were playing that she was unfamiliar with because after that session of FIFA I ended up playing my go to relaxation game Good Pizza, Great Pizza, a game in a completely different style of playing entirely and when I handed her the controller she was almost immediately familiar with the mapping of everything and was pretty much an expert right away, even better than me. Then the next days after that I was playing Plunge on the PC this time and when she tried it, she was quite good at it. It took her a while to be familiar with the mapping of that game but unlike FIFA she had the hang of it after 10 or so minutes give or take. Then we played Celeste back on the PS4 and just like FIFA she would ask me what certain buttons do, if there was a certain way her hands should be on the controller and constantly looking up and down from controller to screen to see if she implemented the correct action, again for me it was quite an exhausting watch. After that we ended the entire thing with Stardew Valley and A link to the past, both on the Nintendo switch of my brother. She definitely looked much more comfortable with the screen in her hands, I suspect due to being able to directly see if her command input from the controller which was just in her hands would translate to the screen which was also just in her hands, but in this instance the difference in game genre didn't seem to bother her playthrough of either games, by all accounts she was pretty in tune and comfortable in farming in her land and guiding Link in his journey to rescue Zelda. Overall it was quite a nice little time that I look back on now and realize was quite in tune with the same experiment you conducted here, though the results were pretty varying, she did have a select few genres of games that she found herself at much more ease in and a select preference of her console too.

I'm a 60 year old guy who got into videogames back with the Commodore 64, then DOS games, and simple scrollers. I've always LIKED videogames, but I've never had a LOVE of them, so I never spend more than an hour a few times a year on them. I empathize completely with your wife in how she approaches the games. I have friends who play games nonstop and they know I like games, so it amazes them when I'm not playing the latest and greatest. But as much as I want to love playing games, it's never really clicked with me. So I'll get through the training at the beginning of a game and that will be it for a year. When I come back I'll have to go through the training again because i forgot everything. So I end up doing a lot of the racing games, or retro-styled games. I need to be in and out within an hour, or I lose interest.
It was interesting watching this video and seeing a lot of myself in your wife's gameplay. I'll keep at it, though. I find games here and there that I like to play. And what seems to be a problem in the gaming world ("The whole game can be finished in under six hours.") is what will draw me to it, knowing it's got a definite end in sight right from the beginning.
I've got a ton of games for the PS3 (I know!) and buying anything past that when I haven't finished a tenth of what I already have seems needless. But, whatever. I play them until I get frustrated enough to turn them off rather than respawn.

After being a PC gamer for something like 15+ years, I started playing with a controller a couple months ago and hit the exact same problem with controls. I had to look up (and sometimes learn by trial and error) to know which button this icon or that name corresponds to. It felt strange to realize that there are so many assumptions in most games about the player's prior knowledge

I actually had this exact experience recently!
I’ve grown up playing Nintendo games like Mario kart, splatoon, Mario odyssey, etc, so I’m not completely clueless. I recently got a pc for my engineering classes, and was really excited to play pc games for the first time. My boyfriend recommended lethal company to me, but even after an hour, it felt completely unplayable. I didn’t understand how to pick up the items I ordered from the terminal, and it felt like the enemies were constantly killing me without giving me time to react. This made me super confused and frustrated because I had no clue what I was doing wrong. This video actually made my experience make a lot of sense. There are a lot of things that seasoned gamers take for granted, which is why I struggled so much at first!!

Thanks, the fact that you mention that going right is almost always the right path is very intersting, is tied to design principles that tell us that that when tou look to the right you move foward to the future, and when you move to the left you are looking to the past. But I never noticed this was tied to the design of 2D levels.

You might have forgot but we learned by doing it ourselves or I know I did and I know this sounds weird but I think common sense has alot to do wit it ,I'm barely doing survival games now and yea it gets frustrating but I'm doing all the wrong so I know to do it right later but mario is all common sense tho right lol the rocks go up as u push it from the bottom but the controls part I get 😅

I'm 40 y.o. and I remember every step of my journey of becoming fluent in video games. Starting when I was 5 years old. It's about the only thing I remember.

The Uncharted games suck. More like "Very Charted"

You really have a solid trust in your marriage to give your wife a Dark Souls game. I was ready to divorce myself the first time I played a Dark Souls game

Thank you, now I understand why my wife can't play like me, she's not fluent in gaming language, I couldn't understand why she doesn't know the basics mechanics of a game, I always tried to tech her, but now I'll try to understand her limitations better.

I'm seeing this video and I'm thinking that a new video with TOTK would be interested. You can solve shrines in many different ways

Would've hated it if I asked my boyfriend about a game and he made me run a fckn experiment playing all this shit that I don't care about since it's not the game I asked about. Jesus. Don't do this shit to your non gaming friends its embarrassing. It's like making someone marathon watch 10 hours of LOTR when they have expressed a small interest in fantasy movies. Stop fckn overwhelming people like this, this is exactly how you get people to turn away from the things you like. You played games naturally and over time stop trying to cram all those experiences in such a short amount of time for someone, that is absolutely not how it works since that is not what happened to you. God people really love forgetting that

I remember playing GoW3 and getting killed by Poseidon several times because in the last POV beatdown it asks you to press L3+R3 to make the "thumbs in the eyes" final move and I just had no idea what that meant

This is a very interesting experiment. I have been playing videogames for about 30 years and never really thought about how something so natural for me nowdays would be for someone that never really touched a joystick.
Like was said in the video i too don't know how and when all these mechanics became so automatic for me that i can play almost any game without even thinking about it.

Despite reading the pinned comment, I really do wonder how she feels about being called "the lady I live with." I'd personally go with "that woman that lives in my house" but to each his own
