@patagonia
Thanks for watching our film, and for your comments -- our primary goal with the film was to shine a spotlight on these issues, to spark dialogue and encourage changes in the way we think about river and fish conservation and fishery management. The common ground we all seem to share is a love of rivers and an interest in seeing wild fish return in greater abundance. Patagonia has been working to protect wild rivers and wild fish for over 40 years. We were founded by an avid fly fisherman – and we’re proud of all our connections to the fish world, which range from our fly fishing and salmon product lines, to the over $20 million in grants we’ve given to local groups working on these issues in communities around the world.

To that end, whatever your point of view, we hope you visit Patagonia Action Works, to learn more about and support groups working to protect wild rivers and wild fish - www.patagonia.com/actionworks/about

Further, this is the 3rd film we’ve made about these issues. First was Damnation, which highlights the destructive effect of obsolete dams on healthy river ecosystems and habitat; and then, Blue Heart of Europe, which shares the shocking story of a tsunami of dam development in the Balkans region of Eastern Europe, and calls for a stop to the construction of 3,000 new hydropower dams and diversions. We couldn’t agree more that habitat destruction, dam building, mismanaged harvest, and pollution of our waterways are also incredibly important issues – check out these films to get a sense for some of our advocacy across the issues.

This is bs fish farms and salmon hatcheries are notging the same. Here in B.C. our hatcheries supplement the sport fishing and first nations and commercial fisheries it provides jobs and economic opportunities for many. As well as help iffset damage done my deforestation mining and other human interferences that decimated our salmon stocks over the years. Our coho have bounced back fenomanly through strick enforcement and hatchery programs like capilanos. Also rivers inlet hatchery produces the largest chinook in the world they only take what they need to not over compete native and non native fish. As for the rainbow removed from a system and the brown trout have bounced back in montana thats more bull. Rainbow are native to those rivers and lakes brown trout are invasive species from germany and Scotland. Tgis is a billionaire trying to run his mouth and get people on board with his narrative and in this day and age people just jump in board with what they think is right without doing proper research.

It's crazy to see 👀 these little kids talking with common sense in a natural way of living but at the same time being taught to not live normal in a natural way of living on earth 🌍 as if we are the ones that give life and feed the earth 🌎 when it's not human beings that feed the earth 🌎 and all of us on earth 🌎, it's our Creator that feeds the earth 🌎 and all of us in the world 🌎 just like when our Creator let the rain 🌧️ come down to the ground to feed the earth 🌎 and it naturally grows the food to feed us all on earth 🌎 which means our Creator really is in control of this creation none of us created on earth 🌎 but was created by the one and only power that created all thing's our eye's 👀 see 👀 on earth 🌎, and to rape little kids minds with lies to not think normal in just letting life flow in a natural way without tampering with our Creator creation is sick and crazy to hear people put lies into little kids minds like this when naturally a little kid knows it doesn't sound right at all,, and one of the little girls said this in the video if you heard what she said which was right but they had her doing the opposite So she will grow up tampering with our Creator creation and not letting our Creator control the creation naturally in nature in this creation our Creator allowed all of us to be apart of on earth 🌎 that none of us created but was created by the one and only power over all thing's our eye's 👀 see 👀!!!! That's what the world 🌎 should be teaching the kids to do is honor our Creator creation and appreciate our Creator for allowing us all to be apart of the creation because the true reality of life none of us on earth 🌎 is really in control of this creation, and if we all would let our Creator control the creation and stop tampering with it everything will flow and keep producing itself by the power of our Creator, and the world 🌎 would look naturally beautiful like a Big garden!!!! 👑Z👑❤️

Although this is about the loss of wild salmon, it's also about the Orca population... fascinating that the Orca pod(s) off Spain are attacking boats lately. One has to wonder about the correlation between the oceans over-fishing, warming, etc and the Orca's anger (or at least it seems that way)
Incredible to think that Elon Musk is on record saying : "the world needs more humans"

A very good doco on the subject of wild&hatcheries stocks of salmon,interesting to note the various effects on other spieces in the sea&river's systems. I have yet to see an article of similar standing&reserch in New Zealand where Brown& Rainbow trout along with Quinet&Chinook salmon where introduced into a pristine environment with native Glaxsides of many types,short fin,long fin eels where the original inhabitants of the waterways & they are all competing for the same food source in the river,we seem to have a healthy balance where overfishing or habitat has been taken into account,but with genitic variables from hatchery fish being a regular top up source for the introduced species when needed,leaves me wondering just how long it will continue as we have large fish farms that invariably loose stock

@rcknrol7258
50 years of my life there were solid runs of hatchery salmon and steelhead on my local rivers . And for 70 years of my dad's life , there were hatchery supplemented runs on the same rivers that were successful.

There were also very solid runs of wild fish .

It wasn't hatchery fish that caused the decline. It was commercial fisherman, guides ( on wild fish rivers ) , the internet crowding rivers AND the shutdown of hatcherie s.

The river in my backyard is a perfect example of the crazy erratic policies of the WFS and ESA .

So - back in the 50s when the dams were put on my river , the federal government told the Army corps of engineers that they had to replace the wild run of salmon with a hatchery program . They did . After a few road bumps it was successful. Between the 50s and the 2010s there were only a handful of bad return years . The best years were actually in the early 2000s . 2002 to 2006 . Lots of spring chinook and summer steelhead.

So after a couple of years of really hot weather and a few select bad returns, NFS and ESA started filing lawsuits to take non native fish out of the planting schedule.

In the meantime the internet social media and youtube were blowing up fishing spots . Guides were getting clients now from all over the world . This was a double triple punch to the wild runs mainly on the coast .

So all of this kept adding arrows to the quiver of NFS and ESA.

So on my river in the early 70s , odfw started a plant of winter steelhead on my home river . It was successful, but for whatever reason it wasn't popular so they ended the practice. That little winter run started spawning on their own and created a little sleeper run of winter steelhead. It was nice , you could catch and release wild steelhead in February or March. They were healthy beautiful fish . In 2010 saw a guy catch and release one that was easily over 20 and very healthy . What does NFS do ? Get them off the protected list because they are not native to the river ??? Insane .

How you say ? They did this scheme by having odfw take some hatchery chinook to the upper middle fork of the willamette above the dams , letting these HATCHERY chinook spawn , and what offspring survives being washed down both dams , comes back as magically a pure wild fish . Then when those pure wind fish ( from hatchery stock ) come back to the ladder 4 years latter , they take the ones with adipose fins in a truck back up to the upper mid fork to propagate again . And they say these hatchery origin salmon are more pure than those self propagating steelhead ? Are you kidding me ? And in 2019 they even ended the summer steelhead runs.

Then they also say they have to protect the wild runs because of climate change . That's funny because the wild coho don't seem to be bothered by climate change . They are thick in the rivers right now . Siuslaw, willamette, and Umpqua. And no its not because they eat different food . The #1 food source for our salmon is pink shrimp . Not artic krill those are way farther north , it's pink shrimp. So it's not climate change , or hatcherie fish .

Comercial trollers , comercial netters , guides ( on wild fish rivers ) , and youtube fishing channels. The last two guides and youtubers exploded in 2010 ...subsequently wild stocks crashed.

So these NFS and ESA are just people that like to feel good about themselves. Most of them are hoity toity fly fishermen too . They want it for them and no one else .

They will be the ones responsible for the death of salmon runs . Mark my words.

Well thank God I watched this film because I was about to take a job working at a US Fish & Wildlife national fish hatchery in Wyoming. And now I can say that NO, I will not contribute to this major mistake that is devolving and threatening wild fishes. I used to be an avid supporter of fish farming— I spent months researching and writing papers about the economic benefits of fish farming— because I thought it was reducing pressure on wild fish stocks. But this film has flipped my understand on its head!!! Thank you @Patagonia for such a beautiful and thorough exposé of a pretty big misunderstanding, yet another example of humans trying to engineer our way out of the inevitable consequence of living beyond our means.

Dude they said the hatchery has a byproduct of adult salmon carcasses? So they don't sell the fillets after taking the eggs out? Well I'm not sure if that makes sense at all, I tend not to believe that, but when they take a block of frozen fish and lift it up with a backhoe and drop it down onto the parking lot asphalt so that the ice smashes and the fish don't stick together and you can take the individual fish and they're going to have children bury them in the woods on a school field trip. So basically they are saying the only reason that keeping the fishery going is so that way they can have a bi -product

People see the possible benefits to fish populations, but not the other side of the argument. They relentlessly attack something they do not understand. Those dams provide HUGE economic value through cheap, renewable power to over 70,000 homes. They provide and immense amount of jobs locally. The water behind those dams can be stored for years when the river is low or the water is hot, allowing it to be released when needed for salmon populations. And you don't think about all the other native species that benefit from the reservoirs created. Geese and huge amounts of other waterfowl. Invertebrate like crawfish and more. The removal of those dams will release a huge amount of silt and sediment down the river that will make it nesr impossible for salmon to reproduce. You are effectively wiping out the remaining salmon population for possibly the next decade. There are alternatives to complete dam removal that allow salmon populations to still use the upstream habitat. Partial removal of spillways etc, allow reservoirs and hydro projects to stay, but fish can still migrate through. www.snyder-associates.com/dam-modification-provides-an-alternative-to-complete-removal/#:~:text=longer%20an%20issue.-,Rock%20Ramps,to%20create%20a%20stable%20slope.

That fisherman saying "Nature is gone" so hatchery fish are better than none. What a realist. Nature is not gone, we just need to stop doing what we are doing, like stop fishing and let nature find a way. That's the reality that nobody wants to face.
