 | I'm pretty sure there's a mold psychosis in Finland that was caused by the media. Not saying there aren't people really affected by mold, but a huge portion of it is just a nocebo effect affecting people needing tin-foil hats, similar to electricity allergy or 5g sensitivity. The fun or sad thing about placebo and nocebo effects is that they affect people even when people now they are receiving placebo drugs. So as long as people talk about mold, people will get symptoms. They recently tore down the school I used to go to in the 90s. Nobody had any symptoms back then. But after the mold psychosis had set in most of the teachers and some pupils started to have symptoms even though I'm pretty sure the school didn't have any more mold than it had back in my day, It was already 40 year old school back then. They actually have done international test where they measure the amount of microbes in schools and Finnish schools had far less than schools in Spain, France, England etc. Yet our kids and teachers still have more symptoms than any other country.  | Nice that you mentioned Floorball/salibandy! I had played it for 10 years and quit but I'm still a referee after 10 years from quitting playing. Finland and Sweden are the two dominant countries in that sport and right behind them are Switzerland and Check Republic. Also Latvia and Norway are becoming tough there. Well, in 70s-80s they built very well insulated buildings that didn't have proper ventilation or were not really meant for more modern mechanical ventilation/air conditioning and the net result was that structures started to gather moisture. Moisture brings mould and suddenly in 90s- early 2000s we have hundreds of buildings with problems with mould or bad air quality. This was so wide spread that you almost could look at a building and go "oh this building was built using this common style and finished at *date*? When I was a kid, a cat came yo our yard and stayed with our family for couple of months, then he/she continued his/her adventures. And we were heart broken. When I can again have a dog, I'm tempted to have another Bernese Mountain Dog, but I'll go for a shelter dog for sure. Your list of surprises were very different from the usual culture shock videos. You know there are other sort of systems too: I saw someone made a funny video where a bunch of people were simultaneously, all the same time, buying from one person behind the disk. Don't recall any more which culture it was, but I'm thinking it was some Mediterranean country. No queueing, but a cultural adaptation to keeping track of multiple persons speaking same time.  | Many people in Finland have many serious reactions to different types of mold. For example asthma, migraines and olfactory perception. Some people that have to live houses that have mold have to live with these sumptuous even after they get to move to a new apartment or school. I have lived in a house that had mold 1,5 years. I had a migraine 60-75% of the time I lived there and 24/7 headaches. So aler, alert⚠! As you say is so true and necessary!  | My dad was a construction engineer and did quite a lot of renovations for higher income housing because of mold. There are fundamental issues with Finnish construction methods and ventilation. Won't go too much into detail but you can expect to see a LOT of the buildings to be in some sort of mold problems in the next two decades. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, these things are getting better but the current mechanical ventilation that uses low pressure will cause problems for a long time. We tried to build "bottles", fully air tight but nothing in that scale is airtight. For example when russian tourists are going to buy things from stores, they automaticly speak russian to customer service and mostly don"t even try to speak english.  | Shelter cats come to you treated for things so they are healthy, also neutered. Cats are not much appreciated as pets unlike dogs so shelters are very underfunded as well. And yes the money is a small measure against the cat being abandoned again. What you get though, in vet prices, is a good deal. (Please adopt a cat, people.) Miss my rescue cat so much still.  | I can definitely relate to most of the points when I moved to Sweden about the same time as you. The numbers system imsyeeof queue definitely impressed me, as they had it everywhere. The floorball they have it in Sweden too (innebandy). I had a go but it wasn't my thing 😂. I was far more impressed by playing football against a team made up of female players only....and all of them were more technical than me ( at the time I thought I can actually play ok 😂😂😂).
