@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
What do you think? Would you have done this much work on a 44 year old sailboat to fix it up?
...Or would you have just bought a new sailboat with the extra 500k you have in your bank account?
Please leave a comment even if it’s just “BUY A NEW SAILBOAT” ....or “FIXUP THAT OLD SAILBOAT” ...We would love to know what the majority of our watchers REALLY think after watching this diy video!

RIP Patrick, I can tell a life well lived. My dad and I are fixing up a 1976 Ranger 33 sloop. We put out a new diesel in and replaced all the rigging. The bottom job was more of a band aide fix as we discovered some delamination and many many blisters! We have spent way too much money on everything so far and fear the next haul out. I think we’ll need to get scrappy by sailing south to Mexico or Central America to complete the work, or buy/lease land here in California(also insanely expensive) to complete the project. We’re in Monterey, CA. Any place down south you’d recommend doing the work? I could probably spend a 3-4 months, Nov-March on the project. Or sail it down there in November, grind everything down and then let dry out in the yard for a year.. definitely need to be scrappy or else we’re gonna sink into boatyard debt and have all the fun sucked out of sailing.. any advice you may have to offer I am all ears! Looking forward to watching your other videos. We have a similar ethos in seeing the value of restoring a piece of history. Thank you.
Michael

@nicholaspablocmith3165
I was under the impression that the blistering problem was caused by the use of a fire retardant resin in the hull / deck layup for a number of boats. I am not sure how many boats were thus affected. Pretty sure the Valiant support groups on the web have a list of the hull numbers, from beginning to end of the boats made with that resin. After a period of time the retardant additive caused a severe negative reaction with the polyester resin and severe blistering occurred sometime after the boats were finished and left the yard.

The problem can also be caused by an improperly adjusted resin application spray gun. Using two different material nozzles, simultaneously these guns mix the resin with the catalyst in the air in front of the spray nozzle. Sometimes the catalyst spray nozzle drips even when the spray gun trigger is fully released. These drops of catalyst fall into the uncured fiberglass / resin matrix of the laminate. But since the catalyst is not thoroughly mixed with the resin it forms pockets of highly catalyzed resin. The result usually shows up right after the part is removed from the mold.

Long screeds(fairing compound application boards) can be made from the same spring steel that is used to make the fairing tools for drywall mud. Best is about 4" ~ 5" (100~125mm) wide, length to suit, but usually at least one yard, to one meter long. Regular thin sheet metal is not suitable for this as the metal blade will take a set or permanent curve. The spring steel will always return to being flat and straight unless severely over bent.

An easy way to transfer the water line and / or the top and bottom of the boot stripe is too use a water hose. On your boat a 50' long hose would have worked quite well. It is easy to buy or make water hose to 1/2" hose barb adaptors and put them on the ends of the hose. Add about 3'~4' of clear vinyl to each end of the hose. Keeping the ends elevated, fill the hose with water.

Next measure the length of the water line from the bow to the stern on the hull itself. This length will be longer than the DWL length. Foreshorten this length equal one inch to one foot of measured length. Simply divide the measured water line length by 10. So a 30' measured water line / 10 would be 3'. 3' / 12" = 3".

Get two scrap pieces of plywood 3'~5' long and about 12"~18" wide. Put a straight line on the long dimension a few inches above the bottom edge of the plywood. Along that line put two marks representing the fore and aft water line, spaced apart equal to the number calculated above. In the example above, the fore and aft marks would be somewhat more than 30" apart, probably around 33" to 35". Measure along the line and put a mark every 3.3" to 3.5" using the example above. Your exact measurement will of course depend on your boat. At every mark make a line 90 degrees vertical. Make these lines long enough to transfer the top and bottom of your boot stripe also if you choose. This method can be used to create your own boot stripe if you want to make it wider or with more sheer.

Nail the ply to something that will not be moved for the duration of the project, make the long dimension horizontal and situated so that the bottom edge is a couple of inches lower than the water line of the hull. The boat does not need to be perfectly level for this procedure. Put one end the clear hose at the front of the water line on the hull. Take the other end of the hose and hold it up to your plywood board. Adjust the ply up and down until the water level in the clear part of the hose is level with the boat's waterline. Hold the other end of the hose up to your plywood. Adjust the ply up or down so your line on the ply is the same as the water in the clear tube. If you suspect your boat is not sitting perfectly level make a number of transfers to the plywood at different points along the WL.

Do the same thing from the aft end of the waterline. Place the mark for the aft end of the waterline at a distance equal to 1" to 1' from the bow mark. You can now draw a straight line between the two points. Thus your water line is now transferred to the plywood at two points. If you put a mark on the hull about every 3' about where the water line should be you can transfer the measurement from the ply to the hull using the water tube.

If your boat is not level athwartships use the second ply panel to mark the WL and boot for the other side of the boat.

If you transfer the boot stripe measurements to your plywood with same method then after painting / repair you can transfer the measurements back to the boat. And / or you can change the amount of sheer or width of the boot stripe at this stage.

Now the important part. The boat nor your ply cannot be moved until all the transferring is done. If it is necessary to move the boat and you have lost the WL and / or boot on the hull due to repairs or sanding not all is lost. Before the boat is moved transfer the WL to the hull. If you epoxy a short piece of small line to the stem, stern and one point amidships at the WL you can use those marks with the water hose to transfer all the marks back to your hull.

@areid7015
hi to put up a water line surely you could have used a long seethru tube filled with water, you mark the water height on both ends of the tube, then get someone to hold the mark on one end ogf the tube on your water line, then you go around with the other end, move your end up and down until the water level is on the mark, then mark the boat.
do this for as many points you need. obviously yhr boat will need to be level.

@vicnighthorse
We did the same thing to our Westsail in backwater Baja back in 2012. It took us 5 months of all day every day misery. Thankfully we did it in the winter so we didn't die of heat stroke but that crappy marina (Marina Singlar Puerto Escondido) didn't heat the shower water so we froze every time we took a shower at night to get the day's dust off us. We also did other out of the water stuff like the cutlass bearing at the same time and that added to the time it took.

In 1977 I bought a new Hunter sailboat and within 2 years I had the same problem. I thought Hunter should have taken care of it under warr but they said no. I believe there was a problematic gel coat being used in the '70s. Anyway, I sold the boat without fixing the issue. If the Hunter had been a higher quality boat I probably would have fixed the problem and kept the boat. Note I came to this site after watching Rebecca's very sad memorial for Patrick. As I now watch his videos one by one I can't seem to get my mind around the fact that he is no longer sailing the world. Rest in Piece Mr. Childress!

Great job, great message! The way i see it, scraping your old boat and buying a new boat to avoid some maintenance is the cheap way-out. By far it does not bring the same joy as fixing up your old boat. I have the same experience, sometimes it is not about money and a business-case-driven decision. Before you know it, your behind your desk calculating your ROI, TCO, MTBF and other stuff like that. Sometimes it is simply about passion and personal accomplishment by doing the work yourself, with you own hands. Again, great couple, keep going guys!!

This boat was bare bones,the owner planned to sail it to Central America, then Australia, and then Africa .Then along the way get all the wood work and decorative metal work done. It was going to be cheaper than hiring a carpenter and bringing the wood to Canada.

@ConfusedSoul24
Drawing a waterline is actually fairly simple. All you need is a clear hose with colored fluid inside.
Step1 Before removing the waterline make sure the line is level in all directions. Just hold the fluid level at the bow and stern to the line and adjust the boat until it is level. Then repeat the process from port to starboard. After everything seems fine hold one end to the bow on level with the waterline and go around to check.
Step2 Now you just need one point where you measure the waterline (usually bow or stern)
Step3 When everything is done just grab the hose again, take the one point measured out. Hold the level of the fluid in the hose to that point, walk around the boat with the other end and mark with the sharpie every few inches.

Alternatively you can use a laser level. They are well below €100,- nowadays. But they only work well at night.

@MikeBanks2003
I agree that fixing up an old but quality build sailboat is a good idea. As for blisters, I had a pal who had this big Roberts design, --and they were notorious for blisters. They were built by several different makers, Roberts just being the design. The blisters occurred above and below the waterline--and I wondered why. Much later, a fellow told me the problem was using an epoxy or some other strongly adhesive impermeable coating INSIDE the polyester hull.

Apparently, there is always some atmospheric moisture adsorbed into the mix either in the chopper gun or during lamination, from the atmosphere or from an air compressor. This can escape from the fibreglass over time, because the glass resin mix is not completely impermeable. Once someone seals the inside, that means moisture and any un-cured resin or esters HAS to come out over a long period of time through the outer gel coat. Hence blisters in any paint coating.

Solution--if any--would be to scratch some grooves in any impermeable coating on the inside of the hull. Lotsa luck!!

Mike.

Barnacles and growth fall off in the sun in a week or 2. A blister is a hull or deck delamination, filled with acid that the intrusive water (salt Water) made by slowly breaking down the components in fiberglass. When you grind that fiberglass down deep enough to remove the blister, you grind down through 80% of the hulls strength and integrity. The fiber. Lovely long strand flexible contiguous fiber. It's like patching holes in a bullet proof vest using cellophane. I wouldn't take that boat to sea. I've sailed quite a bit, 14 years in the Caribbean, South pacific, Med. I've seen plenty, I did it from the deck of a sound boat. Everybody lived.
