i'm surprisingly comfortable disagreeing with this video mostly on taste. the tones of the flick are what i love most, and underpin my... i guess suspension of conventional criticism. if you tell me a movie is better if it only has one tone (/aesthetic/genre/level-of-irony-or-relationship-with-reality) i'll see what you mean but disagree. particularly, i think it's important to see the Will Sasso character as the only one who sees the absurdity, and is aware that the characters around him are from different genres than one another or himself. he's the literal pimp, and i think "pimps don't commit suicide" should be an obvious brown note. pimping ain't asperation-worthy. but i'm sure at least some of that is my effort rather than the film's.

Southland Tales always makes me wonder what level of irony its working on, the film is obviously meant to not be taken at face value, it never feels like a real movie, it feels a made up movie in a movie with the most random assortment of actor's. Parts of it are great in a Lynch way, parts of are even somewhat moving, and then parts of it are funny but like in a family guy way, parts of it are just cringe but its supposed to be is it? Ive heard ppl say this a great satire of the military industrial complex but like its not a satire it just tells you about it, its obviously going for something more obscure. Its a failure for me because it just doesn't register, its like watching COD cutscenes, whilst reading to thomas pynchon, whilst listening to Kesha and Radiohead at the same time its just mad

This is actually the best and most underrated film ever. I'm a film buff and I have seen almost any film you can throw at me. From Cannes sh*t to academy award winning cr^p and STILL this film takes the crow, each and every time. While I applaud the effort to explain "why this movie is the worst" in 15 min I feel that this channel doesn't understand that this film is in a league of its own. No other film can even touch it. I'm not being sarcastic, I'm actually speaking from the heart. I'm not only a film buff but an indie filmmaker myself, and to have seen this film has been the best thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life.
Nowadays I have make it a religion to read the prequel novels on June 30 every year, and then on July 4th watch the film religiously (now in glorious BluRay thanks to Arrow Video) and still be amazed by a magnificent uncut gem this is.
Long Live Richard Kelly, the only person in the world who has the balls to make what it needs to be made.
If I ever become a billionaire, all I'd do with my money would be to give it to Kelly and tell him "make whathever film you want, it will not only be ok, it will be groundbreaking everytime" (and I would also try to cure hunger in Africa, but that's ~~like~~ secondary).
Anyway, I hope you revise this film, not without reading and rereading the prequel comics, and also studying the Book of Revelations, and also understanding the background (and also watching the Cannes Cut); so you can reshoot this youtube video with a new title: "Jared's Pick For The Most Underrated Film Ever."

for me, it is the perfect crossover between lynch, darko, legend, some kind of french cinema brutality, american pop-culture and the way short stories work or a movie like titane works. like an big accident you can not look away from. watched it 20 times and is always great. and my other favorite movies are more like johnny got his gun, pi and irreversible. 9/10!

I have watched "Delivery Boys", "El Matador", and "Ice pirates"; heck, I watched "Johnny Sunshine", "The Vanguard" and (love save me) "The Legend of God's Gun". I watched a movie in which a mob boss accidentally sets off an electrical chair because of being secretly gay, and a movie in which the corpses of a rock band get turned into animatronics. And despite all that, I stand by my opinion that the worse movie ever made is "Hurt Locker". It's just a lazy bl0wjob to warmongering imperialism and it can go fvck itself. I can name p0rnos that are better than "Hurt Locker", I have done before, and I will do it again.

I don’t know Justin, but in retrospect “circa 2022”, is it really the “Worst Movie Ever”? Maybe it’s more “best documentary” of the current state of our dystopian world? The tragedy here is that reality has become much much stranger than fiction. This is why I take most “Post-Modern” artistic criticism with a grain of salt. “Words” will never be “Film”, or “Paint”, or “Tones”, or “Bricks” or whatever media a source of artistic endeavor comes from. It’s all kinda ironic now, isn’t it? And before we go too far into a “critical” reply, let’s not forget about the fucking videos of floating pyramids over US aircraft carriers that were confirmed to be “real” in July 2021 by the US Navy. A global pandemic, an unfolding economic meltdown, a threshold of world war 3, AND a planned US military coup ALL at the same time sounds more mixed up than a milkshake—until it’s not.

I hate to break it to you, but Southland Tales is the pretentiousness test. If you don't like Southland Tales, then you're the pretentious one. It is a highly self-aware and deeply introspective film that is a litmus test for one's own pretentiousness. Much in the same way that Shakespeare was reviled as lowbrow trash by the peers of his own time.

This is a movie that had potential but tried telling so many stories you get lost and bored. The directing style and cinematic style are very bland/basic. The slow storytelling killed this movie. I got to an 1hr 34mins and thought I better check how long is left. I figured it was wrapping up and was almost over. Nope I still a had a hour to go. You can't really skip to the end with half the movie still to come. Boy was I bummed out.

(For what it's worth, "Shadows of the morning light..." etc. is from the climactic moment, lyrically, of "Three Days" by Jane's Addiction. The song itself is about some kind of 3-day drug binge...I realize if you don't know that, it seems even more cryptic---why is a Jane's Addiction reference needed amongst the list of apocalypse metaphors when you are already using, oh, literally the Book of Revelations...or is just part of the "pop art" ethos that is, quite unevenly, guiding this movie's tone? ...But. I still like a lot about Southland Tales. I think one big misstep, perhaps, is that Kelly maybe hadn't totally found his comedic voice. Because I think if the movie was played with less pseudo-philosophical blither & actually more bombacity, more outrageousness, then the satirical possibilities in his ideas might have had some true bite. E.g., "pimps don't commit suicide," really should be hilarious. It gets undercut later as something serious. Anyway. Too much from me! Great video!!!)

I stumbled across this movie, and was trying to figure out why all the WTF moments having no idea the background to it. I kinda stuck with the idea until the end, that Justin Timberlake is the guy Sean William Scott's char supposedly killed, and this is all a PSTD episode of reality mixing with the chaos inside of his head, and how (Scott's) he may escape it..., That the Rock might be his Sanity telling him to not commit suicide, and the others are forces/reason for him to do so. I expected him to wake up from a gunshot wound, or Car Crash in hospital, like he had tried to commit suicide. Then it just ends and nope I was wrong..... I think that might of been me trying to come up with a reason for the wtf dialog, and how I could reason that outside forces entering into the distorted view of a psychotic pstd victim could somehow make sense.... when in the end it was just really really bad. I didn't stumble across this till like 2018, had no clue about the director or anything else at the time besides someone telling me it was batshit crazy. Yes it is the worst movie I have seen.

Southland Tales really grows on you. Needs multiple viewings to sink in. It's actually pretty good. It definitely doesn't live up to what it sets up, but I can respect what they were going for. And that opening scene is great, especially the first time going in cold.

Time to take another look at this movie Jared lol ...all the worst parts of this movie aren’t looking as satirical as much as prophetic
The ocean slowing down ( the great conveyor is )
The almost ( almost 😔) absurd division and characterizations between “ left and right “
The media celebrities being morons but having the loudest voice in the public
The “deep thinking “ of narcissistic idiots who think they got it all figured out .
Shallow commercialism randomly overtaking the “ content “
Profound existential problems being taken on by the very dumbest people they have to offer . Seams pretty dead on .

Also aside from comparing it to now . I always took some of the bad performances and dialog as intentional because in the beginning The rocks character was wrighting a story / script that turned out to unfold in to the tale we are watching and his character was a dumb ass lol .

This is a thoughtful consideration of Southland Tales, and I appreciate the critical dive into it... However, it will not take the film off of my top 10. I think I just look past alot of the things that were mentioned in this video. I love it for it's ability to have scenes that are seriously thought provoking, humanitarian, existential, political, artistic/musical, and religious. And then also to be able to mash some of these things together in certain scenes and tie it all together with COMEDY. I think it's brilliant! To each their own, but I absolutely love this film! It's one of my all time favorites. I'm no film critic, but it's in a class all it's own... especially with the all-star actors... it's a shame they failed a bit at Cannes... I feel like that killed their box office numbers. A film like this could make a comeback years later though. My 2 cents... thanks for reading and thanks for making the video!

Let me fix this for you:. Southland Tales is masterpiece story about the psyche behind reunifying oneself after trauma. Guilt, self destructive behavior, escapism, post traumatic stress, all things leading to suicide, and facing those things and it's causes with acceptance and grace. Its set in the back drop of Bush era America where the parallels of societies dysfunction also look like someone in deep need of therapy. It's a movie that says too much, but the layers stack upon themselves nicely upon multiple views. It's core is about reunification of conflicting sides of our our minds and as a society instead of inevitable suicide/destruction. And why would we go to not go down that path? Because we're pimps, and pimps don't commit suicide

Also, to the creator of this video, don't hashtag philosophy on this video and then only spew out arbitrary hollywood standards of what makes a good movie and why this movie fails. Cut your fucking hair, go live in the woods for a summer and try again

Caveat: The cannes cut is bad but the regular one is great.
The movie isn't trying to make you say "woah deep". It's a psychedelic sci-fi satire bordering on the parody at times.
The characters are dumb, their pseudo profound ominous gibberish makes perfect diegetic sense.
It makes fun of American culture, politics and stupidity a lot. It feels like the world between now and Idiocracy.
It's a style of comedy and apparently not many people are sensitive to it.

annabelle series especially the last one. The movie never attempts to build interests in itself and rely on their previous movies' ways n make the audience go oh oh! its annabelle omgggg. the plot ( not even good at all, barely would call it one) drives the characters in this movie, the major problem is the characters too are garrrrbage. This movie is supposed to be the big send off but it insults the fans by being so half assed not even half assed less than half assed the whole thing.
