 | The trouble is that as long as it isn't financially beneficial, corporations would rather destroy the world. I think the only solution is to find a way to make doing the right thing the better financial option for them. Otherwise corporate greed will win out every time.  | I often think about a book I read a looooong time ago. I was in like first grade(I'm 20 now), so it was around 2007 and my school library had this large picture book-don't remember if it had any words or not-about a pretty much-uninhabited earth with only colonies of sheep who lived there. Anyways, the first pages were about how the sheep lived happily and peacefully just eating grass and drinking water but of course, one day they see a spaceship land and a bipedal, humanoid appears from inside and explores. He leaves back into space and I think I remember interpreting it as the sheep thinking he wouldn't return. Eventually, he does, but with his entire species on numerous ships. The humanoids seem excited to be there, and then quickly build their civilization. Their civilization expands fast with cars, roads, skyscrapers, and the like quickly taking over the vast grassy lands. The sheep are eventually pushed to live underground, in dark, damp caves with the only food to survive on is moss and the water that drips from above. The humanoids' development takes a turn for the worse, as their factories and such pollute the planet so bad the skies turn gray, turning the once beautiful and thriving lands into a polluted, soon-to-be wasteland. Unsatisfied with such living conditions, the humanoids board the spaceships they used to arrive, leaving the desolate planet behind. After some time passes, the sheep realize the humanoids abandoned ship, and venture upwards in hopes to feed upon delicious grass and fresh water. However, they discover the wasteland the humanoids left, and travel for a long while, and I think they find a river and grass growing over the cracked roads and broken buildings. They are content once again. It is implied that the humanoids never learn their lesson, and will keep exploring to pollute healthy planets to suit their desires over and over. Or at least, I think it was implied. Sorry, this is long, and I'm not thinking anyone will care much for this story but I read this book when I was 5?? and I still remember the gist of this story to this day even though I don't ever remember having a single birthday party in my life. I understood the humanoids repeating history in their path to neglect planets and that harmless creatures are only hurt due to this lack of care for the earth. I understood that this was meant to show this was a possibility that could happen to our society because of the immense disregard for the planet. I think about this story a lot, I'm not sure why but I think it's because I felt so bad for the cute sheep as a kid. This is also why it is important to bring topics like this in various forms. From jokes to video games to children's books. A lack of exposure, understanding, and empathy will be our downfall, and spreading the word can cause us to be like those humanoids. But it sounds like it might happen eventually with people searching for other inhabitable planets while polluting ours. Of course, you could also interpret the ending as, "with humans gone, everything will return to natural order" but that's a biiiiiit,,,, yknow for a children's book haha. On another note, being in America(unsure if it's like this elsewhere) makes it really hard to contribute to saving the earth. In some cities, they are strict with the separation of trash and recyclables. But in the cities next door, they don't require/care for recycling. And sometimes the city will say they want you to separate them but actually just dumps them in the same area/containment(or something idk where they take it). It gets frustrating when you care for the earth but the government doesn't. Or your neighbors. But hey! Its America! We want to do whatever we want bc we are individuals and we don't care if we burn the planet or poison our water! As long as I get my amazon package I just ordered by tonight, any consequences for my actions are not mine to deal with!! If you care about it, then its your problem >:(( edit: okay I found it but its not sheep, they're called 'Wumps'. I just remembered them being sheep??  | I don't think it is as bad as people and certain non profits make it out to be, but it is something to be addressed. HOWEVER, people need to stop blaming the US for climate change, the US is above most 1st world European countries, but the US is also bigger than Europe. China and India are currently the two largest contributors to climate change, in the US, many governmental groups refuse to allow Nuclear, which is the only "Net Carbon" positive energy source we have in the US, we can't use thermal in the US like the Norwegian countries, we are harvesting natural gas from the trash that we cannot recycle. Also for RT, Wind and Solar are not "net Carbon" positive, what us Net Carbon? It is simply the statement that the amount of energy and waste product that is lost/used/created in the items manufacturing will outweigh the amount of energy that it will produce. Take wind Turbines in Oklahoma, the amount of carbon created from smelting the ores used to build the turbine means that the Turbine has to run for 5 years minimum. The. You have the Carbon created from mining or recycling the materials, which typically means another 3 years, and then the fiberglass used to create the blade must run for 15 years to become carbon neutral. They typically don't, and the Blades can NOT be recycled so they are buried typically. This along with many other reasons is why I don't think we should be jumping at every "renewable, clean and environmental" energy source that is put up. I think that we do need renewable clean sources, but we must also weigh what they cost to produce, and how much we energy we expect them to return over their life time. Since right now, we are expending more energy and creating more greenhouse gases than many of the current Wind Turbines and solar panels actually produce/remove in their life time.
